Evergreen is soft and blue-green grass that has a luxurious appeal with its narrow blades and carpet like appearance. Evergreen is grown locally in Florida and can adapt to a wide range of environments. This grass is the least sensitive to changing climates and can continue to grow during the colder seasons if temperatures do not drop too low. This is the only one of the St. Augustine breeds that can be expected to retain its full color over fall.
Evergreen is a semi-dwarf grass which allows it to create a nice dense and smooth carpet like look that is plush to walk on bare foot. While it feels great to walk on, it is not great as withstanding high traffic. Its root system is very robust and can grow in many different mediums like sand, clay, and muck. Evergreen loves to be in direct sunlight but can grow healthily under moderate shade conditions making it ideal for lawns that will have sunlight obstructed by tall buildings and foliage. During periods of drought, this grass will begin to brown at the tips of its blades giving you an indication that it may be time to turn on your irrigation system to give it half an inch of water. Once quarterly fertilization is recommended to keep your lawn vibrant and healthy.
Evergreen is not only drought resistant it is also capable of withstanding a wide range of soil conditions. From all the varieties of growing mediums this grass is comfortable growing in, its roots can thrive in soil conditions that are both acidic and alkaline. During fertilization it is recommended to add some acidity to combat the alkaline nature of city water; no supplementary ph. balancing should be required outside of the periodic fertilization cycle. It takes about a month for Evergreen to take root into your yard’s growing medium. During the first ten days, this grass should be watered 6 times for 10 minutes each time to maintain moisture at the root level and prompt the roots to wake up from their dormant state. The next ten days require at least half an inch of water every day. And finally, for the last ten days of the establishment period half an inch of water is recommended three to four times a week depending on climate. After this thirty-day period you need only water your lawn as needed, its roots are deep enough at this point to be able to pull water from the soil.
