Floratam Sod - The Perfect St. Augustine for Florida Climates

St. Augustine Floratam is a darker colored, green grass, deriving from the St. Augustine lineage of grass. This popular grass strain was developed in the 1970s by Texas A&M University and the University of Florida as a result of two agricultural experiments in Florida and Texas, hence FLOR ATAM, and has become commonplace throughout the state of Florida and beyond.

Floratam sod is a dark green color and is coarsely textured with soft blades that are comfortable to walk on. Floratam is a sun and heat loving grass that will grow aggressively during the summer if adequately watered. St. Augustine is a popular grass in Florida for its ability to withstand heat and humidity. Floratam grass is a very hardy coarsely textured grass that can grow in many different types of soil including sandy soil. It is also tolerant of high or low pH levels.

Over the cooler seasons, fall and winter, this grass will slow its growth and may even go dormant, but it will sprout back up in spring and start growing very quickly. Regular watering and fertilization are recommended in preparations for the winter months to help Floratam keep its color. During the summer, weekly mowing is recommended because of its aggressive growth, aiming to keep the height of the grass between three to four inches.

It's a tough grass that can handle heavy foot traffic, making it a good choice for high-traffic areas. St. Augustine grass is also relatively drought-tolerant, so it's a good option for areas that don't get a lot of rain. Everglades sells Floratam sod in Florida in areas that do not get too cold during the winter months due to Floratam’s vulnerability to cold weather.

Floratam is capable of growth with only six hours of sunlight making this sod ideal for applications where a building or trees will obscure sunlight during the day. The grass stem grows horizontally first by helping to patch up any damage caused by foot traffic or equipment before it will begin to grow deeper into the soil.

This property makes it resistant to traffic damage, but its soft blades do not hold up well to constant foot traffic. It is not as recommended to use Floratam in small areas with heavy traffic, however, you can still maintain it with proper care.

Salt carried by coastal winds is often deadly to grass but Floratam does resist salt spray well. Floratam does not produce seeds that can germinate, therefore if there are gaps that are too large for stolons to cross additional pieces of sod may be necessary.

Slightly acidic soil is ideal for Floratam’s root system. The acidity helps its root absorb nutrients and water. Did you know, diluted citrus juice is an organic way of lowering your lawn's PH level?

Floratam is a great grass that does well across the board in Florida and the South. It is a workhorse of the industry and is affordable no matter where you shop. This is a good old standby grass.

Everglades partners with local sod farmers that take environmental protection and environmentally sustainable farming seriously. Everglades has its foundations built on commercial agriculture and we understand the value of supporting local farmers and environmentally friendly farming practices.
