Zoysia Sod - The One and Only Solution to a Perfect Lawn

There are many reasons to love Zoysia grass, especially if you're used to cooler temperatures and smaller leaf blades. Zoysia provides a finely textured plush feeling lawn that is perfect for any home. In addition, the grass can develop amazing deep green colors to provide contrast in your landscape. You won't be disappointed with this choice!

Coastal proximity is usually damaging to lawns due to salt spray pulling water out of the growing medium and sand not because capable of absorbing much water. Turf grass is very tolerant to salt spray and its vast root structure helps the grass capture more freshwater from the sand. Its leaves are wide and soft to the touch making them very comfortable for walking on.

Zoysia is a drought-tolerant grass that will go dormant and turn brown but will green back up once you add water. When preparing your seed bed or yard, be sure to keep it moist like any other grass and the soil ph level should be around 5.8 to 6.5.

The growing season for zoysia is from April to July early summer. Zoysia grass is a warm-season grass, meaning it flourishes in the hot summer months. When soil temperatures reach 75-80 degrees, it's the perfect time to start thinking about installing zoysia sod in your yard.

Watering Zoysia Grass

You want to keep your water-heavy, in the beginning, to help it put down roots, and then slowly back off as it becomes established. Once you get the grass established Zoysia is a very tough grass and can withstand a lot of wear and tear.

In the cool season and in early spring, when you have warm days and cool nights with plenty of moisture as we get in Florida, make sure to use a fungicide to avoid large patches or small patches. Zoysias are susceptible to these diseases, so it's important to be proactive in your sod maintenance program in cold weather.

Fertilizing Zoysia Lawns

Fertilizers for Zoysia Sod should have a higher content of potash than nitrogen. We recommend soil testing first. However, a standard fertilizer lawn fertilizer with the controlled release is better for Zoysia than just solubles.

Mowing Zoysia Grass

Zoysia mowing height should be kept at a height of between 1 and 2 inches. Keeping it at this height will help to ensure that the lawn is healthy and performs well. However, before laying the sod, it is important to prep the yard so that there are no highs or lows. This will help to ensure that the lawn is even and the Zoysia will not be scalped.

Zoysia Sod Weed Control

This grass’s dense root system also does not allow weeds to be able to establish themselves, essentially, acting as its own weed control. The root system prevents most weeds from surviving, however, if weeds do manage to grow and become an issue, using herbicide that contains MCPA, Dicamba, or DSMA, can be used without damaging the sod. Lawn grubs such as Couch, Kikuyu, and Buffalo can be deadly for most grass, but although damage will occur Zoysia grass lawn will recover.
