What you need to know about Egg Rock

Egg rocks are smooth, naturally round stones approximately a 3/4" to 2 1/2" in size. Not only will these rocks add an attractive touch to your outdoor space, but they are also good in controlling erosion. Egg rocks are commonly used for pathways and planting beds as well as around water features such as fountains and ponds. At Everglades we are proud to supply our customers with this premium product.

Egg rock is a large variety of river rock that is eye catching due to its size and color. The pristine white shine of egg rock looks great on its own or accompanied by other kinds river rocks. In landscapes were a water feature such as a fountain or waterfall is present, egg rock’s surface becomes very smooth and reflective making it stand out at night when illuminated by colored lights. As egg rock gets dirty its white color may begin to become a light gray. To reverse this a simple but thorough washing is all that is needed to bring our product back to its pristine white color. Customers whom prefer to keep track of any substances that are entering their landscape use inorganic mulches like egg rock since they do not leach any nutrients or chemicals into their soil.

In order to enjoy the functionality along with the aesthetic benefits of egg rock we recommend spreading an even layer of at least 3 inches and no more that 5 inches. An advantage of using egg rock over organic mulches is that bugs will not search and feed from rocks. This acts as a deterrent from the spread of bugs like termites. The amount of evaporation sunlight causes is significantly reduced with a properly applied later of inorganic mulch like egg rock. This will save you money and the environment from paying the cost of watering your landscape feature. Also, by blocking sunlight from reaching the topsoil any undesirable weeds that have their seeds blown into your landscape feature will have a very difficult time reaching sunlight after they germinate on the surface of your soil, creating an effective weed preventative. Too deep of a layer of egg rock will create issues. By reducing the amount of evaporation, your soil loses some of its ability too drain, if egg rock does its job too well your soil may become overly saturated for an extended period of time. Soil that remains too wet provides an ideal environment for pathogens like fungus from harming your plants and absorbing all the nutrients present in your soil. Additionally, overly wet soil can cause root rot and worse plant death due to suffocation.

You can purchase egg rock at Everglades either in bags or in bulk, which is the most cost-effective way to buy larger quantities for your project. Not only do we offer in store pickup, but we will also deliver the product to your driveway as early as tomorrow.
